Most women know that smoking is not something they should do when they are pregnant. If you do not stop smoking while you are pregnant, the baby has the possibility of being born with birth defects and health issues. However, one thing that some women do not realize is that smoking can also affect their ability to get pregnant in the first place.

Smoking causes fertility to decrease significantly, and many women find they are not able to become pregnant at all while they are smoking. Along with this, second hand smoke has also been shown to cause issues with fertility as well.

Second Hand Smoke

Studies have shown that there is very little difference in the fertility of women who are smokers versus those who consistently are subjected to second hand smoke. Only about 20% of women who live in a house with a smoker are able to become pregnant. This is compared to the 19% of women who become pregnant when they are smokers themselves.

Because of these stats, it is important for women to limit the amount of second hand smoke they are subjected to. In the end, this can make it easier to become pregnant and will help keep them healthy at the same time.

Other Ways to Increase the Odds

Along with staying away from second hand smoke, there are other things you can do to increase your chances of becoming pregnant. For starters, make sure you are maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly. Doing so can help you maintain a healthy wait, which is one factor that is important for becoming pregnant quickly.

There are also supplements that you can take to help you have an easier time conceiving. One of the most important supplements is a prenatal vitamin. While taking these while you are pregnant is considered extremely important, taking them while you are trying to conceive is crucial as well.

If your partner is a smoker, there are also some things he should do to help increase his sperm count. The best thing for him to do is to stop smoking, at least for a few months, while you are trying to conceive. This will help increase the number of sperm that he is able to produce and can make them healthier at the same time.

In addition to this, he should try to keep his testes as cool as possible. This means wearing loose fit clothing and avoiding areas that will make that area of his body hotter than normal. For some men, this means staying away from heavy machinery and for others it revolves around saunas and hot tubs.

These are all things you and your partner can do to help you become pregnant faster. But, the most important thing is to avoid second hand smoke as much as possible. If you are struggling with this issue, make sure you talk to your doctor about how to battle the side effects of second hand smoke.
